A WORD FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
|
|
Dear readers,
We are pleased to share with you the latest news from CargoM.
On November 19, more than 1,800 people converged on the Grand Quay of the Port of Montreal for the third edition of our
Career Day in Transportation and Logistics, organized in partnership with Service Quebec’s regional department for the
Island of Montreal. Robert Beaudry, City Councillor for the Saint-Jacques district and responsible for economic and
commercial development and government relations on the City of Montreal’s Executive Committee, and Sylvie Vachon,
President and Chief Executive Officer of the Montreal Port Authority and Chair of the Board of Directors of CargoM,
launched the event. Fifty-five companies were present to offer participants numerous job opportunities available in the
industry. Several hundred students also came and were able to learn more about the trades in our sector, listen to
speakers, try out simulators and see truck demonstrations. We can already confirm that our 4th edition will be held on
November 5th. Feel free to contact us to book your booth space now. Career Day is also an opportunity to promote all
the stakeholders in the supply chain.
With the same focus on showcasing the advantages of our sector, a few weeks ago we officially launched our new website
www.montrealtransportlogistique.ca/en. The objective of this promotional tool is to promote the Greater Montreal hub to
business people and users of our supply chain. Also to promote our sector, in partnership with the Ministry of Economy
and Innovation (MEI), we organized industrial visits to demystify the 4.0 shift. Details of these two projects can be
foundIN THE MEDIA section.
The Cluster has not missed a step representing the hub of Greater Montreal this year. We attended major conferences
such as Cargo Logistics Canada 2019 in Vancouver and Retail Industry Leaders Association - Link 2019 in Orlando. Both
events are a must to meet key players in the North American supply chain. Always with the objective of promoting
Montreal and its greater region internationally, CargoM will be present at the Transport Logistic conference and trade
fair in Munich from June 4 to 7, 2019. In 2017, approximately 2,000 companies were present and more than 50,000 people
visited the trade fair. CargoM will take this opportunity to organize a promotional evening for our logistics chain.
The General Delegate will welcome us to the Quebec residence in Munich to host this evening. If you are interested in
participating in the Munich mission and/or sponsoring our event, please contact me: mcharbonneau@cargo-montreal.ca.
To raise awareness of our industry and its importance for Greater Montreal and the province, we recently had the
opportunity to meet with Éric Girard, Minister of Finance and Minister responsible for the Laval region, and Chantal
Rouleau, Minister of Transport and Minister responsible for Montreal and the Greater Montreal region. We presented the
sector challenges, the mission and the main actions and orientations of the Cluster. We will certainly have the
opportunity to work closely with these government departments. We were excited to learn that Transport Québec's
Sustainable Mobility Policy - 2030 will be maintained and the advisory committee that emerged from this policy will now
be permanent. CargoM's expertise will be put to good use.
I would like to take this opportunity to welcome our new members AGD Verchères Express, Cole International and
Transcare Logistics Corporation.
In closing, don't forget to keep Tuesday, June 11 free. That is the day we are holding our annual meeting of CargoM
members, followed by a networking activity.
Happy reading,
Mathieu Charbonneau,
Executive Director, CargoM

Launch of Montreal Transport Logistics
|
|
To promote our industry, CargoM is pleased to announce the official launch of its new Montreal Transport Logistics -
MTL website. The main objective of this website is to showcase the Greater Montreal hub. Bilingual, it is specifically
intended to demonstrate the advantages of our logistics chain. This site will enable us to reach and inform foreign
investors, motivating them to come and develop their activities in Montreal. It highlights the economic assets and
advantages offered by our territory.
You will find information on import and export transit times via Montreal, the reasons for using Montreal for your
business, videos presenting Greater Montreal’s strengths, and, of course, information on CargoM members and partners.
Transit times for all other modes of transport will soon be added to the site.
In addition to the website, the Ambassador Guide includes a printable and digital brochure entitled Why Choose
Montreal? and a promotional USB key containing documents presenting the supply chain and its actors. It will be
distributed to Quebec delegations abroad and to several consulates.
We invite you to check out the site and share it with your network.

Industrial visits to Groupe Robert and Quincaillerie Richelieu
Digital transformation is a real development opportunity for the logistics sector. This transformation towards Industry
4.0 is shaking up manufacturing companies, retailers, wholesalers and distributors, and bringing about major changes in
their organization. In order to demystify this new trend, CargoM and the Ministry of Economy and Innovation (MEI)
organized two industrial visits, one in December and the other in February.
|
The first visit was to Groupe Robert. This constantly growing family business, founded in 1946, specializes in freight
transport and logistics. To date, the company has 3,500 employees, 41 distribution centres and terminals, 1,400
tractors and 3,000 trailers.
|
Participants in the visit to Groupe Robert on December 4
|
With its extensive network of distribution centres covering all of North America, Groupe Robert can provide value-added and fully customized assembly, packaging, kit packaging, labelling and promotional insertion services to companies such as Danone Canada and Pratt and Whitney Canada. To be able to meet demand, Groupe Robert had to make an integrated and cutting-edge shift in digital technology.
|
Visit to Richelieu Hardware on February 4
|
The second visit was to Richelieu Hardware. The company specializes in the supply and distribution of hardware, furniture and decorative items for residential and commercial spaces. Over time, as more and more acquisitions were made, the distribution portion of the operations took on a significant role. To lower its storage costs and become more efficient, Richelieu Hardware has invested in the installation of a robotic system for handling small products and preparing orders. This technological shift has allowed the company to double its storage space. AutoStore makes it possible to process orders quickly and reduce movement and handling in the warehouse, maximizing the work space and making it safer. This technology has allowed Richelieu Hardware to triple its order picking without having to increase its workforce.
|
These two examples of successfully implemented digital projects motivated us to choose Groupe Robert and Richelieu Hardware. They in turn presented, to approximately 50 registered participants, the reasons that led them to opt for a 4.0 shift and the obstacles they had to overcome.
Many thanks to Groupe Robert and Richelieu Hardware! Their warm welcome made our visits very successful (96% satisfaction) and the generous sharing of their experiences ensured that 97% of the participants acquired new knowledge. We would also like to thank the Ministry of Economy and Innovation (MEI), a partner in these two events.
